Part of the Furniture Facts series developed by Bob and Ellen Tuttle of AMG Vintage House, this reference covers the standard sizes of American formal dining tables. Knowing typical dimensions helps when evaluating a piece for your home or when shopping for vintage and antique dining furniture.
Standard American Formal Dining Table Sizes
Formal dining tables in the American tradition generally follow a set of established proportions. While custom and regional variations exist, the following sizes represent the most common configurations found in antique and vintage furniture from the early to mid-20th century.
Rectangular Dining Tables
- Seats 6: approximately 60″–72″ long × 36″–40″ wide
- Seats 8: approximately 78″–96″ long × 40″–44″ wide
- Seats 10: approximately 96″–120″ long × 44″–48″ wide
- Seats 12: approximately 120″–144″ long × 48″ wide
Round Dining Tables
- Seats 4: approximately 36″–42″ diameter
- Seats 6: approximately 48″–54″ diameter
- Seats 8: approximately 60″–72″ diameter
Oval Dining Tables
- Seats 6: approximately 60″–72″ long × 40″–44″ wide
- Seats 8: approximately 78″–96″ long × 44″–48″ wide
Extension Tables
Many American formal dining tables were built with leaves that extend the surface. A typical table with one or two leaves can add 18″–24″ per leaf. When evaluating a vintage extension table, note both the closed length and the fully extended length, as well as how the leaves are stored — some designs incorporate self-storing mechanisms while others require separate storage.
Height Standards
Standard dining table height is approximately 29″–30″ from the floor to the tabletop surface. This dimension remained remarkably consistent across American furniture manufacturing throughout the 20th century. Allow roughly 12″ of clearance between the seat of a dining chair and the underside of the table apron for comfortable seating.
